Ba'al Shem Tov, Noach 92/בעל שם טוב על התורה·נח צ״ב

אהדיבור של ישראל הוא עולם הדיבור כביכול המחיה העולם, ומחשבתן של ישראל הוא עולם המחשבה, ועולם הזה מקבל אותיות הדיבור דרך אמצעות המדות, חסד דין רחמים, לפי שעולם הזה יש בו שטח וגבול, צריך לקבל על ידי המדות, כמשל השמש שאין יכולין להסתכל בו מחמת גודל הבהירות שבו, והאור היוצא ממנו יכולין להסתכל בו, ולהשיגו וליהנות ממנו לסיבת מיעוט בהירותו, כי אילו היה באור בהירות כמו בשמש לא היו יכולין גם כן להשיגו וזהו (תהלים פ"ד) כי שמש ומגן ה' צבאות:

1The speech of Israel is the World of Speech that enlivens the world. The thought of Israel is the World of Thought. And this world⁸ receives the letters of speech by way of the character traits – Hesed, Din and Rachamim.⁹ Because this world has limited dimensions, and must receive through the traits.This can be understood by way of example. It is impossible to look at the sun because of its great brilliance, but one can look at the light it emits, to grasp and derive benefit from it because the sun’s strength has been diminished. Whereas, were the light of the sun to have the same brilliance as the sun itself, it would also be impossible to look at it.
