1AND THE LORD SAID. Stiffnecked means that they refuse to do as God commanded. They are like a person who runs along on his way and does not turn his head back to the one who calls him. This expression is employed with regard to the Israelites for the following reason. Scripture tells us that Israel served idols in Egypt. It reports that God sent prophets to them saying, “Let every man cast away the idols of Egypt.”13 Moses related this incident14 to their children15 before he died.16 Moses employed different terminology. However, the import of the words is the same as here. Scripture here states that God told Moses, Go, get thee down; for thy people…have dealt corruptly (v. 7). However, Moses later quoted God as saying, Arise, get thee down (Deut. 19:12). Scripture there17 writes, This is thy god, O Israel (v. 8).18 Scripture goes on to say here, Now therefore let Me alone (ve-attah ha-nichah li) (v. 10). However, it later reads, let Me alone (heref mi-menni) (Deut. 9:14). Scripture here reads, that My wrath may wax hot against them, and that I may consume them (v. 10). However, it later reads, that I may destroy them and blot out their name (Deut. 9:14). Scripture here reads, and I will make of thee a great nation (v. 10). However, Moses later quoted God as saying, and I will make of thee a nation mightier [and greater than they] (Deut. 9:14). The meanings are the same.
