1OR TO THE OFFSHOOT. Eker (offshoot) means a root. The reference is to a person who accepted the Jewish religion. He himself is from the family of a stranger. The word eker has no neighbor.164 However, it is similar in meaning to ve-shereshkha (and root thee out) (Ps. 52:7). It means the opposite of its stem.165 means a root. However, ve-shereshkha means, and uproots you. Similarly, eker comes from the Hebrew stem meaning a root. However, its meaning is someone who has been uprooted, i.e., a stranger. Similarly, te’akker (thou shalt hough) in thou shalt hough their horses (Josh 11:6).166
