Ibn Ezra on Leviticus 26:45/אבן עזרא על ויקרא כ״ו:מ״ה
אוזכרתי להם. לעולם:
1BUT I WILL FOR THEIR SAKES REMEMBER. Forever.
בברית ראשונים. זאת הברית הכרותה בסיני וקרא זה הדור ראשונים כנגד הבנים שיגלו בארץ אויביהם ויש אומרים על אבות העולם. וטעם אשר הוצאתי אתם. אותם שנשבעתי לאבותם להוציא בניהם מעבדות והראשון נכון בעיני:
2THE COVENANT OF THEIR ANCESTORS.143 (literally, the first). The reference is to the covenant made at Sinai. Scripture refers to this generation as “the first,”144 in contrast to their descendants who will be exiled in the land of their enemies. Some say that the reference is to the “patriarchs of the world,”145 and the meaning of whom I brought forth146 is those to whom I swore that I would free their children from slavery. The first interpretation appears to me to be the correct one.
