Sifrei Devarim 164/ספרי דברים קס״ד

א(דברים יח ב) וְנַחֲלָה – זוֹ נַחֲלַת שְׁלֹשָׁה.

1Pisqa’ 164¹²⁵1. “An inheritance he shall not have” (Dt. 18:2)—within the inheritance of the three[trans-Jordanian tribes, Gad, Reuben, and Manasseh].

בלֹא יִהְיֶה לּוֹ בְּקֶרֶב אֶחָיו – זוֹ נַחֲלַת חֲמִשָּׁה.

2“In the midst of his brothers” (Dt. 18:2)—nor within the inheritance of the five[Canaanite nations, the Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites,Hivites, and Jebusites (e.g. Dt. 20:17)].

גה׳ הוּא נַחֲלָתוֹ כַּאֲשֶׁר דִּבֶּר לוֹ – לְהַגִּיד מֶה גָרַם.

3“HASHEM is his inheritance, as He has promised him” (Dt. 18:2)—this explains the rationale behind[Levite landlessness].¹²⁶, 24.
