Ibn Ezra on Exodus 12:40/
1NOW THE TIME THAT THE CHILDREN OF ISRAEL DWELT IN EGYPT WAS FOUR HUNDRED AND THIRTY YEARS. There are many calculations454 in Scripture whose point of departure is unknown to us. I will now mention a few of them. And it came to pass at the end of forty years, that Absalom said unto the king (II Sam. 15:7). Now Absalom was not then forty years old.455 Furthermore, King David’s reign was not yet over.456 The commentaries tell us that the point of departure for this calculation is from the day that the ark abode in Kiriath-jearim (I Sam. 7:2). It is stated, Now it came to pass in the thirtieth year (Ezek. 1:1). Some say that Ezekiel was thirty years old when he began to prophesy.457 refers to the thirtieth year of Ezekiel’s life. Others say that the reference is to the thirtieth year of the jubilee.458 Other say that its point of departure is the finding of the Torah which was discovered by Hilkiah the priest.459 26 and Targum Jonathan. However, I am uncertain, for they are opinions without foundation or support. It is written: And within threescore and five years shall Ephraim460. be broken, that it be not a people (Is. 7:8). The latter prophesy was uttered during the days of Ahaz, whose reign lasted for sixteen years. Samaria was exiled in the sixth year of his son Hezekiah’s reign.461 The commentaries were therefore forced to say that the sixty-five years start from the day that Amos prophesied, And Israel shall surely be led away captive out of his land (Amos 7:11). Others say that its point of departure is the earthquake.462 Now when we investigated the years starting with the time that Israel came to Egypt in the days of Joseph and his brothers we found that they do not come to the number of years spoken of in Scripture.463 There is no doubt that Kehat464 was among those who descended to Egypt.465 Let us imagine that Kehat466 begot his son Amram at the end of his life and that Amram467 similarly begot Moses at the end of his life. Now the years of Kehat and Amram’s lives come to two hundred and seventy. Moses was eighty years old when the Israelites went out of Egypt.468 It all thus comes to three hundred and fifty years. We are missing eighty years. It is for this reason that the elders469 added, “dwelt in Egypt and other countries.”470 9a. The four hundred years in and shall serve them; and they shall afflict them four hundred years (Gen. 15:13) is not connected to and they shall afflict them471 but rather to thy seed shall be a stranger (Ibid.).472 There are many other such instances.473 We similarly find in our own chapter, from the first day until the seventh day (v. 15).474 Now we find it stated that God told Abraham at the covenant made “between the pieces,”475. See Gen. 15. that thy seed shall be a stranger…four hundred years. We know that the number of years that Israel dwelt in Egypt476 is contingent upon the “end,”477 which was told to Abraham.478 The author of the Seder Olam479 was compelled to say that after Abraham came to the land of Canaan he returned to Haran.480 explains that the number 430 refers to the time that passed from the “covenant between the pieces” (Gen. 15), and the number 400 refers to the time from the birth of Isaac. The accounting is as follows: Abraham was 70 years old when God made the “covenant between the pieces” with him and told him that his children would be strangers for 400 years (Gen. 15:13). Abraham then went to Haran and spent five years there, as it is written, And Abraham was seventy and five years old when he departed out of Haran (Gen. 12:4). Now Isaac was born when Abraham was 100 years old (Gen. 21:5). Abraham thus lived in Canaan for 30 years without a son. Exodus, as noted above, starts the count from the “covenant between the pieces.” Genesis starts the count with the birth of Isaac 30 years later. However, it must be pointed out that the Seder Olam’s accounting is based on a number of assumptions: a) That the covenant between the pieces occurred when Abraham was 70 years old. Scripture nowhere says so. b) That Abraham returned to Haran. Scripture does not say this either. Hence I.E. did not want to accept the Seder Olam’s calculations. The question thus remains how to reconcile the number of years mentioned in Exodus with those given in Genesis. The commentaries were forced to say that the prophecy I am the Lord that brought thee out of Ur of the Chaldees (Gen. 15:7) is not connected to the above-noted chapter481 but was said later.482. However, there is no need for all of this.483 Only the counting of the four hundred years is from the day that Isaac was born.484, for Scripture speaks there of thy seed. The additional thirty years start from the day that Abraham left Ur of the Chaldees, the land of his nativity, and came with his father to Haran, as it is written, and they came unto Haran, and dwelt there (Gen. 11: 31). Abraham lived in Haran with his father for five years.485 He came to the land of Canaan at the age of seventy-five and never returned to Haran. Now thirty years passed from the time that Abraham left Haran till the day Isaac was born. Abraham was the important one,486 and to him was the land of the Canaanite given. The verse I am the Lord that brought thee out of Ur of the Chaldees (Gen. 15:7) is connected to the entire chapter preceding487 and following it.488 The meaning of Now the time that the children of Israel dwelt in Egypt is to be explained: they were strangers there, also their fathers were strangers, as it is written, Yea, very few, and sojourners in it (Ps. 105:12); and as Abraham said, I am a stranger and a sojourner with you (Gen. 23:4).
