Sefer HaMiddot, Fear of God, Part II/ספר המדות·
אא. עַל־יְדֵי הַיִּרְאָה וְהַחֶסֶד נִצּוֹל מֵאֵשׁ וְזוֹכֶה לְפַרְנָסָה.
1Fear of God and acts of kindness save one from fire and bring him his livelihood.
בב. מְקוֹם הַהוֹרָאָה הִיא מוֹעֶלֶת לְיִרְאָה.
2A courthouse of Torah law inspires the fear of God.
גג. עַל־יְדֵי לִמּוּד "שֻׁלְחָן־עָרוּךְ" בָּאִים לְיִרְאָה.
3Studying the Shuchan Arukh brings one to the fear of God.
דד. עַל־יְדֵי מֻפְלְגֵי וַחֲרִיפֵי הַדּוֹר מְאִירִין אֶת הַיִּרְאָה, וְעַל־יְדֵי הַיִּרְאָה מִתְנוֹצֵץ זְכוּת אָבוֹת, וְעַל־יְדֵי הִתְנוֹצְצוּת הָאָבוֹת נִתְעוֹרֵר תְּשׁוּבָה בָּעוֹלָם.
4The outstanding and sharp minds of the generation cause the fear of Heaven to shine. This fear sparks the merit of ancestors, which in turn awakens the world to repentance.
הה. יֵשׁ כּחַ בְּיַד הַיָּחִיד לִפְרק על שָׁמַיִם, וְאֵין בְּיַד הָרַבִּים לִפְרק על שָׁמַיִם.
5An individual has the ability to throw off the yoke of Heaven; a community does not.
וו. הַקּוֹל הַיּוֹצֵא מִבַּר־דַּעַת שֶׁבִּקְדֻשָּׁה מְסֻגָּל לְיִרְאָה.
6Hearing the voice of one who is wise in holiness is a segulah for acquiring the fear of God.
זז. עַל־יְדֵי בִּלְבּוּל הַדַּעַת נִתְקַלְקֵל הַיִּרְאָה, גַּם עַל־יְדֵי בִּלְבּוּל הַדַּעַת מֶמְשַׁלְתּוֹ נוֹפֶלֶת.
7Confusion of the mind destroys one’s fear of God. It also diminishes his authority.
חח. הָרִבִּית מַפְסִיד הַיִּרְאָה.
8Charging usury decreases one’s fear of God.
טט. אֵלּוּ הַמְקרָבִים לְיִרְאֵי־הַשֵּׁם, גַּם הֵם זוֹכִים לְיִרְאָה וּלְדַעַת.
9Those close to God-fearing people will also merit the fear of God and daat.
