Bereishes is a free library of classical Jewish texts with an AI study assistant. You can use it on bereishes.com, or connect it to an AI app such as Claude or ChatGPT (the Bereishes connector). This page says what we collect, why, and what you can do about it.

What we collect

  • Your account, if you sign in. When you sign in with Google, we get your name, email address and profile picture. You can use most of Bereishes without an account.
  • What you save. If you are signed in, we store your chats with the assistant, your bookmarks, saved translations, links you share, and feedback you send us.
  • Your questions and the answers. To answer a question, we send it, with the text you are reading, to an AI model provider. We also keep a copy of questions and answers in our analytics, to check the quality and cost of answers.
  • Usage and device data. Pages you view, buttons you click, errors, your IP address, and your browser and device type. We use cookies and similar storage for sign-in and analytics.
  • Connector requests. When an AI app uses the Bereishes connector, it sends us search queries and text references. We log which tool it called, the query, and the request's IP address and user agent. The connector has no accounts, and it does not get your conversation in the AI app, only the requests that app sends us.

Why we use it

  • To run Bereishes: answer questions, show texts, and keep what you save.
  • To find bugs, prevent abuse (for example, rate limits by IP address), and control our AI costs.
  • To learn which features help people, and to make answers more accurate.

We do not sell your data, and we do not use it for advertising.

Who receives it

  • AI model providers receive your questions and the related texts, to write answers.
  • An analytics provider receives usage data, errors, and copies of questions and answers.
  • Our sign-in and hosting providers process sign-in and all requests to the site.
  • Sefaria supplies many of the texts. We request texts by reference, not with your personal data.

We may also share data when the law requires it.

How long we keep it

We keep your account and what you save until you delete it or ask us to delete your account. Analytics and logs are kept for as long as our analytics provider's retention settings allow, and are then deleted.

Your choices

  • You can use Bereishes without an account.
  • You can delete saved chats and bookmarks in the app.
  • To get a copy of your data, or to delete your account and its data, email [email protected]. We answer within 30 days.
  • You can block cookies in your browser. Sign-in will not work without them.

Children

Bereishes is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their data.
