Ibn Ezra on Deuteronomy 1:22/אבן עזרא על דברים א׳:כ״ב

אויחפרו. כמו לחפור את כל הארץ כי החופר יחפש מה שיש בסתר:

1THAT THEY MAY SEARCH THE LAND FOR US. Veyachperu (that they may search) is similar⁶¹ to la-chepor (to search out) in to search out all the land (Josh. 2:3). One who digs (chofer) searches for that which is hidden.⁶² (that they may search) and la-chepor (to search out) come from the root chet, peh, resh, which means to dig. Hence I.E.’s comment.
