After the bris,
before the meal,
the Rebbe שליט
and blessed the father of the boy
that he should merit to raise him etc.
with expansiveness.
And similarly he blessed the mohel, saying to him:
and blessed him that he should continue in his work with success,

I once asked my revered father-in-law, the Rebbe, regarding customs -
why were they not recorded?
And he answered me:
They were not inclined towards this.
And I asked:
Surely there are numerous matters pertaining to practical action that need to be known—how to behave?
And he answered:
Indeed it is a pity
that they were not recorded.
ד
And therefore,
when I saw some custom by
my revered father-in-law the Rebbe,
I noted it in a record,
and that which pertains also to the public,
I understood from my revered father-in-law the Rebbe
that it is worthwhile to publish in public.

Once I happened to be present at a circumcision
in which my revered father-in-law, the Rebbe, was honored with serving as sandak,
and I noted down in my records several customs:
ו
My honored master, my father and teacher, the Rebbe
commanded to bring his tallis,
and wrapped himself in it
without a blessing.
ז
The Bris Milah took place
about three to four hours after Shacharis prayer,
after all the intervals of interruption –
as we find in the Shulchan Aruch of our Rebbe HaZakein several intervals:
until one diverts his mind,
two hours,
and the like –
and nevertheless, he wrapped himself in his tallis without a bracha.
ח
And even though he could wrap himself in a borrowed tallis
upon which no blessing is recited,
nevertheless, he wrapped himself specifically in his own tallis,
and without a blessing,
to indicate that there is no need to bless again
even after a period of interruption.

At the time of the bris-milah
I noticed that my revered father-in-law, the Rebbe
–
–
who was the sandak –
appeared very pale and white,
and at the time of the cutting,
my revered father-in-law, the Rebbe,
turned his head
as one who cannot look at blood.
י
And to note the wonder in the matter -
for behold my revered father-in-law, the Admor, was a shochet,
and nonetheless, he turned his head
like one who is unable to look at blood.
Just so I noticed
that during all the time of the bris-milah
הי'
was
my revered father-in-law the Rebbe
moving with his lips
("whispering with the lips")
softly.
I do not
מה
know
אמר
what
he said during the act,
אבל
but
I noticed
that he was saying something.
Afterwards I asked my father-in-law, the Rebbe,
what he said during the bris-milah,
(the Rebbe smiled and said:)
and I added, that this is a practical matter,
that if I will be honored one day with sandakaus,
I will know what needs to be said...
–
–
but my father-in-law, the Rebbe, did not answer me.
(And the Rebbe
concluded:)
Well, I do not indeed know what
he said, but I know at least that he was saying something.

After the bris-milah,
at the time of the meal,
my revered father-in-law, the Rebbe, said:
The order of avodah after Mattan Torah is
that first must be the removal of the foreskin of the body,
which is the aspect of action,
and afterwards the removal of the foreskin of the tongue,
the aspect of speech,
and afterwards the removal of the foreskin of the heart,
the aspect of thought.
With Avraham Avinu –
before Matan Torah –
the order was reversed:
at three years old he recognized his Creator –
which is the ענין (aspect) of thought,
and afterwards his service was in publicizing His Divinity ית' in the world –
in speech,
and afterwards was milah (circumcision) simply –
in action.
יז
But with us,
the beginning is
in the main matter
– the matter of action.

My honored father-in-law, the Rebbe, related:
Regarding a Bris Milah
for one of the Tzemach Tzedek's grandsons,
they needed to choose
between two Mohels.
One Mohel was an expert craftsman in his work,
but was not so capable of concentrating mystical intentions (kavanos) etc.,
and one Mohel who was capable of kavanos,
but was not such an expert craftsman.
And the Tzemach Tzedek ordered to take
the Mohel who is
an expert craftsman,
saying: Action is paramount (aseiyah l'eilah),
and a "l'eilah" on such a level
that there is no need there for an "address"
("such a l'eilah that one does not need an address there").
כ
And my revered father-in-law, the Rebbe, added:
Seemingly, one can explain the meaning of the matter,
that the reason the mohel who is an artisan can perform [the bris], even though he is not connected to the intentions, is,
because the second mohel directed the intentions,
and as we find in several matters that the intention of one helps also for the second.
But, from the language of the Tzemach Tzedek,
"action above", it is understood,
that the action in itself is sufficient and good,
and there is no need for intentions.

And we must add in explaining
the greatness of the deed of the mitzvah of milah:
The special quality of the mitzvah of milah (circumcision),
whose like we do not find in other mitzvos
(except for Pesach) –
is that it is a positive commandment,
and it has in it the warning of kores (excision),
which is a novelty regarding other mitzvos,
כי,
for,
the warning of kores is only in negative commandments,
and only in milah and Pesach is there a warning of kores
for nullifying a positive commandment.
כג
And the explanation
of the matter:
It is explained in the maamarim (discourses) of Chassidus
that there is an advantage in negative commandments
over positive commandments,
that positive commandments are in the aspect of Vav-Keh,
and negative commandments are in the aspect of Yod-Keh,
for through fulfilling positive commandments
we draw down lights that can come and clothe themselves in vessels,
and therefore their drawing down is through action,
whereas through negative commandments
we draw down lights that are above clothing in vessels,
and therefore their drawing down is in a manner
that through the absence of action (refraining from doing the thing)
the light is drawn down naturally,
but it is impossible to draw them down through action.
כה
that is to say:
there is indeed an advantage
in drawing down the light,
that it can come and clothe itself
כו
in vessels,
and for this reason
a positive commandment overrides a negative commandment,
but nevertheless,
negative commandments
are higher than positive commandments,
since through them is drawn a higher light,
a light that is above enclothing in vessels.
And from the side of the greatness of the virtue of the mitzvos
of negative commandments
over positive commandments
–
—
the warning of karet is
in negative commandments specifically.
And since in the mitzvos of milah and pesach there is the warning of kares,
it must be said that their greatness is like the greatness of negative mitzvos,
meaning, that through them one draws down lights that are above enclothement in vessels,
and more than this, that even the lights above enclothement in vessels which generally cannot be drawn down through action
but only through the absence of action (negative mitzvos),
are drawn down in milah and pesach through action.
כט
ו.
And.
Based on this we can explain
a saying of our Sages, of blessed memory, regarding the superiority of milah (circumcision) relative to Shabbat –
"Shabbat is equivalent to all the mitzvos of the Torah,
and yet milah pushes it aside,
like two matronage (noblewomen) who were coming, one upon the other,
and you do not know which is greater than her fellow,
the one who descends before her fellow,
you know that her fellow is greater than her":
ל
Even though that Shabbos is equivalent to all the mitzvos of the Torah,
behold,
also on Shabbos there is the definition and distinction
of a positive commandment and a negative commandment,
as stated,
that the drawing down of lights into vessels is in a manner of action (positive commandment),
and the drawing down of lights that are above enclothement in vessels is
in a manner of absence of action (negative commandment),
and it is impossible to draw them down in a manner of action.
And therefore "milah (circumcision) pushes aside it",
for milah is greater than Shabbat -
that there is in it the superiority of negative mitzvot
that they are higher than positive mitzvot
(evident from this that there is in it the warning of karet),
that through it are drawn down the lights that are above clothing in vessels,
and not only that, but that these exalted lights
(which generally are drawn down specifically through the absence of action)
are drawn down in a manner of action.
לב
ז.
7.
And in explaining the reason for the matter -
it can be said:
לג
The mitzvah of milah
(and similarly Pesach)
was stated before the [Giving of the] Torah.
And although we fulfill it
because of the commandment [given] after the Torah,
מ"מ,
nevertheless,
it also relates to the mitzvah of milah
as it was before the Torah.
And to note that similarly we find regarding the teachings of Chassidus -
that the Sefer HaTanya relates to the manner of the revelation of Chassidus after Petersburg,
even though its writing was before Petersburg.
לה
And there is to say,
that the distinction between the manner of drawing down lights into vessels through action,
to the drawing down of exalted lights which are above enclothement in vessels through the absence of action,
was introduced after the utterance,
but before the utterance
there was no such measurement and limitation,
and therefore,
in the mitzvah of milah (circumcision) which was stated and relates to before the utterance,
they are able to draw down lights that are above enclothement in vessels through action.
