R. Y.G. shih said that he saw in the book of the Hasidic Rabbi of Munkatch
that he was particular that
the mourner not walk after the seven days of mourning
in a garment in which the tear is seen.
And the holy Rebbe, our master, teacher, and Rabbi, shlita, said:
ד
There is a ruling in the Torah
that "the halachah follows the lenient opinion in mourning",
and accordingly we are accustomed
to be lenient in matters of mourning.
ה
And so too
regarding the putting on of tefillin,
that it is brought in the Shulchan Aruch
that "on the first day it is forbidden to put on tefillin" -
our custom is that we put on tefillin also on the first day
(without a blessing).
ו
When I visited the Rebbe of Satmar for nichum aveilim,
I said,
that our custom is to put on tefillin also on the first day,
and he wondered about this,
since it is explicitly stated in the Shulchan Aruch to the contrary.
ז
And to note,
that also in Maavar Yabok it is brought
that there are those who do not withhold themselves from tefillin
even on the first day of mourning,
and similarly on Tishah B'Av.
ח
This conduct - to be lenient in matters of mourning -
I saw by my honored father-in-law, the Rebbe, in the year of mourning for the passing of his mother, the righteous Rebbetzin.
And the novelty is that even though he was an only son,
and all matters were placed upon him alone,
nevertheless, his conduct was lenient.
ט
And there is to add,
that since the leniency in matters of mourning
is according to Torah law,
this is a leniency not only
regarding the conduct of mourners in the lower world,
rather the leniency is
also regarding the soul of the departed above
(lightening his judgment, etc.). 2. Regarding mourning -
the Rambam writes:
"He should fear and worry and examine his deeds
and return in teshuvah."
י
–
-
There are those who do not know the aforementioned words of the Rambam,
and it is a pity upon them
("Es iz oif zei a rachmonus").
–
--
And in continuation to what was said above regarding
"He who is lenient in mourning" -
it must be emphasized
that this is not relevant to the matter of teshuvah (repentance) (which is in mourning),
for regarding the matter of teshuvah,
on the contrary, one must be stringent!
יב
Regarding repentance (teshuvah)
there are two levels:
lower repentance (teshuvah tata'ah)
and higher repentance (teshuvah ila'ah).
One must therefore be strict
not to suffice with lower repentance (teshuvah tata'ah),
אלא
but rather
that there should be higher repentance (teshuvah ila'ah) as well!
When Harig (shlit
ay) pointed out that to reach higher (il'aa) teshuva
there is a need for a vast process –
the Rebbe shlit
When there is an option for a matter
of skipping and jumping
("springen un loifen"),
why be satisfied with mere walking?!
Admor (the Rebbe) HaZaken explains
that there is Teshuvah Tata'ah and Teshuvah Ila'ah,
and since one must choose between them,
why choose Teshuvah Tata'ah
when one can choose Teshuvah Ila'ah?!
(And the Rebbeshlit
It is a known saying of the gedolei Yisrael
"A krechts from a Yid is teshuvah",
and my revered father-in-law the Rebbe added in the name of the Rebbe Maharash --
that this is a higher teshuvah!

3.
In general, it is accepted among the Children of Israel
regarding the matter of passing away,
that this is only
that the deceased is found on a higher storey,
like a house
and an upper floor ("it is arranged as if one storey higher").
And beyond this, our Sages of blessed memory said:
"Just as his seed is alive, so too is he alive",
and it turns out,
that the change is only in the externality,
but in the internality
there is no change.
כ
And to note also from what is explained in Tanya regarding the matter of fear --
that "with a mortal king, the essence of fear is
from his inwardness and vitality, and not from his body"
("for when he sleeps there is no fear of him whatsoever"),
even though "his inwardness and vitality are not seen to mortal eyes".
And from this it is understood also in our case,
that the main thing is that in the inwardness there is no change.
כא
And as said,
this matter depends on this,
that "his seed is in life",
who walk in the straight path,
and thereby cause nachas-ruach
etc.
(And the Rebbe שליט"א concluded:)
may you merit much nachas from the children
for the length of good days and years.
