Ibn Ezra on Exodus 1:3/

1ISSACHAR. Because the two sins in yissachar (Issachar) are written in succession only one is sounded. Compare, the word machtzetzrim (did blow) (I Chron. 15:24), which is pronounced machtzerim.27 in succession. However, only one tzadi is sounded. Similarly, yissachar is pronounced yisachar. We do not find a similar case with regard to the sin in Scripture.28 are written in succession and only one is pronounced (Krinsky). It is customary for the Hebrews to pronounce a vav prefixed to the labials which are related to the vav, namely, the bet, mem, peh with an alef added to it,29 is a labial. Before a labial the vav is not pronounced like a labial but is pronounced “ooh” so as not to have two labials back to back. and to vocalize the vav with a shuruk. Compare, u-faru (and they shall be fruitful) in and they shall be fruitful and multiply (Jeremiah 23:3); and u-male’u (shall be full) in and the houses of the Egyptians shall he full of swarms of flies (Ex. 8:17). The word u-vinyamin (and Benjamin) is similar. Benjamin is listed before the children of the handmaidens30 because he was a son of one of Jacob’s wives.
