Ibn Ezra on Leviticus 18:30/אבן עזרא על ויקרא י״ח:ל׳
אושמרתם את משמרתי. זאת המשמרת והיא לבלתי עשות:
1THEREFORE SHALL YE KEEP MY CHARGE. This charge. The charge being not to do [any of these abominable practices].
בוטעם אשר נעשו לפניהם. שלא יאמר אדם הואיל ועשו כן הקדמונים אעשה כן גם אני:
2The meaning of which were done before you is, a person shall not say, since the earlier ones did so, I will also do so.
גוטעם אני ה׳ אלהיכם. דבק עם משמרתי שלא ישאל חסר לב למה זאת המשמרת כי אני ה׳ אלהיכם עשו כל אשר אצוה אתכם:
3I am the Lord your God is connected to My charge.139, which precedes it. The thrust of our verse is, Therefore shall ye keep My charge, for I am the Lord your God. One who lacks intelligence140 shall not ask,141 “Why this charge?”142 For I am the Lord your God. Do all that I command you.
