Ibn Ezra on Exodus 18:19/אבן עזרא על שמות י״ח:י״ט

אעתה שמע בקלי איעצך. אתן לך עצה:
1HEARKEN NOW UNTO MY VOICE, I WILL GIVE THEE COUNCIL. I’atzekha, means I will give you council.
בדע כי מלת אלהים הוא שם תואר כאשר פירשתי רק בעבור שידברו בה הרבה, יחשבו זה שם התואר כאילו הוא שם עצם, אלהים יראני בשוררי (תה' נט יא) בראשית ברא אלהים (ברא' א א) ורבים ככה, על כן שמוהו חכמינו ז"ל שם מן השמות שאינם ראוים להמחק:
2[GOD.] Note that the term Elohim (God) is, as I have noted, an adjective.188 It is only because the word is used often that this adjective is considered as if it were a proper noun. Examples of the latter are: Elohim (God) in God will let me gaze upon my adversaries (Ps. 59:11); In the beginning God (Elohim)created the heaven and the earth (Gen. 1:1), and many other instances. It is for this reason that our sages of blessed memory placed Elohim among the names that are not erasable.189 is included among the latter. See chapter 4 of Tractate Soferim.
גוטעם ויהי אלהים עמך. שהשם יעזרך אם תעשה ככה ואמר לו בסוף הדברים שיקח רשות מאת השם על העצה הזאת, וזהו אמרו וצוך אלהים ואין ספק כי כן עשה:
3[AND GOD BE WITH THEE.] Its meaning is, God will help you if you act in this manner. At the close of his words, Jethro told Moses to ask permission of God to act in accordance with Jethro’s counsel. This is what Jethro meant by and God command thee so (v. 23). There is no doubt that Moses did so.190
דוטעם היה אתה לעם. בעבור העם:
4[BE THOU FOR THE PEOPLE.] The meaning of la-am191 is, for the people.
המול האלהים. מפאת השם:
5BEFORE GOD. From God’s side.192 The Biblical text reads, mul ha-Elohim; literally, before of God. I.E. apparently interprets it as: you will face the people from the same side as God faces them: that is, you will serve as God’s messenger to the people (Weiser). It is interesting to note that Peshita interprets similarly. It reads, “teaching the people from God.” However, the mem in I.E. often has the meaning of a lamed. Thus mi-pe’at Elohim might be interpreted as li-fe’at Elohim; that is, you will be the intermediary between the people and God (Krinsky). See Rashi. In this case, mul ha-Elohim means before God.
ווהבאת אתה את הדברים. אם הם קשים, ואלה הדברים הם שאמר משה בתחלה, כי יהיה להם דבר בא אלי (פ' טז) ופי' זה אחר כן את הדבר הקשה יביאו אליך:
6AND BRING THOU THE CAUSES UNTO GOD. If they be difficult. These are the things that Moses mentioned at first,193 viz., when they have a matter, it cometh unto me (v. 16). Jethro then explained this194 to him,195 viz., the hard causes they shall bring unto thee.
