Ibn Ezra on Exodus 18:20/

1AND THOU SHALT TEACH THEM. As to the second thing you spoke of,196 you are obligated to teach and instruct them only those things that they are uncertain of. For it takes great effort to teach all, the work that they must do. Now as to the meaning of ve-hizharta (and thou shalt teach): ve-hizharta comes from the same root as nizhar in and took not warning (Ezek. 33:5). Nizhar means took warning.197 (and thou shalt teach) means: and thou shalt warn.
2THEM. Ethem (them) is a compound of two words.198 and hem.
3[AND THOU SHALT TEACH THEM.] You shall warn them199 to observe the positive and negative commandments that are tied to the heart,200 (duties of the heart) and wrote a work by that name. such as, to love God,201 to cleave unto God,202 to fear God,203 to walk after God,204 to circumcise the foreskin of the heart,205 not to hate one’s brother,206 not to take revenge,207 and not to bear a grudge.208 They are the most important commandments. Moses similarly said, [But the word is very nigh unto thee] in thy mouth, and in thy heart, that thou mayest do it (Deut. 30:14).209 There many such precepts.
4THEY MUST WALK. Yelekhu bah means wherein they must walk.
5AND THE WORK THAT THEY MUST DO. The reference is to positive precepts which are observed by action. Most of them are not positive commandments that stand by themselves210 acts of loving kindness. but serve as a reminder, such as the Sabbath,211 the Festivals,212 the redemption of the first-born,213 loving the stranger,214 ed. by J.H. Hertz, Soncino Press, London, 1967, p. 313. the fringes,215 the tefillin,216 the mezuzah,217 See Deut. 6:4-8; 13:13-19. and also the prohibition against mixing linen and wool,218 and many others.219 I will explain them in their place.
