Ibn Ezra on Exodus 20:5/
1THOU SHALT NOT BOW DOWN UNTO THEM. As do the masters of the forms,192 who think that they can cause upper powers to descend for the needs of a given person.
2NOR SERVE THEM. Thou shalt have no other gods before Me includes sacrificing and offering to the gods. It also includes the prohibition and make no mention of the name of other gods, neither let it be heard out of thy mouth (Ex. 23:13) and the book of Joshua’s statement nor cause193 to swear by them (Josh. 23:7).
3[A JEALOUS GOD.] What God demands is only logical,194 for how can you give the honor due to the Lord who created you and sustains your life to another who can neither harm nor aid.195 Scripture employs the term el (god) to inform us that the Lord is mighty and can exact vengeance at any moment from the idol worshipper without the sinner being able to save himself. Jeremiah said, every man that eateth the sour grapes, his teeth shall be set on edge (Jer. 31:30). The book of Ezekiel clearly states that God the revered swore that the son shall not bear the iniquity of the father (Ezek. 18:20). This being the case, what does Scripture mean by visiting the iniquities of the father upon the children? The answer is that which Ezekiel clearly states. If a father was wicked and his son did not follow in his footsteps, then the son does not bear the iniquity of the father.196 For visiting the iniquities197 is, as I have noted, connected to God’s enemies.198 27b. Poked (visiting) has the same meaning as zokher (remembering).199 (visiting the iniquities of the fathers) means remembering the sins of the fathers. Compare, And the Lord visited (pakad) Sarah (Gen. 21:1).200 which is another way of saying, and the Lord remembered (va-yizkor) Sarah. God is patient with the wicked because it is possible that he will repent and bear a son who is better than he. Now if the son walks in the footsteps of his father and so do the third and fourth generations, then God will not be patient and withhold his anger from the fourth generation. If all of them until four generations are enemies of God, then they will all perish in the fourth generation. For God will remember what the father did, what the son did, and what the grandson did. Hence he will not keep his anger in check when it comes to the fourth generation. Grandchildren are considered as children.201 is short for upon the children and upon the grandchildren. See Ex. 34:7. Hence Scripture employed a shortened form. One can understand this202 from the terms the third and fourth generation.203
