Ibn Ezra on Exodus 20:6/

1AND SHOWING MERCY UNTO THE THOUSANDTH GENERATION.204 Scripture elsewhere reads, to a thousand generations (Deut. 7:9). Some people think this represents a problem.205 However, it does not, for Scripture reads as follows: if you will observe My commandments then God will keep the covenant and the mercy which He swore unto your ancestors, that is, to the three patriarchs.206 This is the meaning of who keepeth covenant and mercy with them that love Him and keep His commandments to a thousand generations (Deut. 7:9). However this chapter deals with another matter. Scripture here states, and showing mercy to thousands.207 Its meaning is, without end, namely, forever. This can be explained in two ways. One, God shows mercy to those who love Him by granting everlasting existence to their souls so that they remain alive for thousands upon thousands of years. Two, that God will eternally show mercy to their offspring who are like them. David similarly said, But the mercy of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting upon them that fear Him, And His righteousness unto children’s children (Ps. 103:17). Now there is no doubt that God’s mercy is eternally upon those who fear Him.208 It is only because Scripture mentions the children’s children,209 in keeping with And His righteousness endureth for ever (Ps. 111:3), that Scripture has to explain that this only applies if the children are good. Scripture therefore says that this is so only in regard to those who keep God’s covenant. When I comment upon the Torah portion Ki Tissa, I will explain to you why the attribute of visiting the sins of the fathers is to be counted among the attributes of mercy.210
2[THEM THAT LOVE ME.] The reference is to the pious.211 [AND KEEP MY COMMANDS.] The reference is to the righteous.212
