Ibn Ezra on Exodus 20:8/
1REMEMBER THE SABBATH DAY TO KEEP IT HOLY. The meaning of to keep it holy is explained by what follows, namely, Six days shalt thou labor. Scripture similarly explains the meaning of and hallowed it (v. 11) by going on to say that God rested on the seventh day from all of His work. The reason the sanctification of the Sabbath is here connected to the Lord blessed [the sabbath day], as it is in the chapter opening with the words were finished (Gen. 2:1), is that God sanctified this day and prepared it so that the souls229 would receive an infusion of wisdom above that of the other days. That is why Scripture states the Lord blessed [the sabbath day].230 I have already explained this in my comments on A Psalm, a Song. For the sabbath day.231 We have seen232 that the sabbatical year is similar to the Sabbath.233 It too is a seventh, that is, it falls every seven years. God commanded that the Torah be read at the beginning of the year234 in the presence of the men, women, and little ones. The reason for this is that they may hear, and that they may learn…and observe to do all the words of this law (Deut. 31:12). Now the Sabbath was given235 for understanding the works of God and the study of His Torah. Scripture thus states,236 For Thou, Lord, hast me glad through Thy work (Ps. 92:5).237 A person is occupied with his needs all the days of the week. However, it is only right that he separate himself on the Sabbath and rest for the sake of God’s glory. He should not occupy himself with vanity by spending his time seeking advice, even if it concerns his past needs. He should similarly not seek counsel about what he should do in the future. The prophet similarly said, Nor pursuing thy business,238 nor speaking thereof (Is. 58:13). It was customary for the Israelites to travel before the onset of the Sabbath to where the prophets lived, as indicated in Wherefore wilt thou go to him to-day? it is neither new moon nor sabbath (II Kings 4:23). I have239 already noted that whosoever does any work on the Sabbath is in essence denying creation. However, such an individual does not deny the existence of God the revered.240 There can be no doubt that the word thou includes all those who are obligated to observe the commandments. Hence nor thy son, nor thy daughter (v. 10) refers to small children for whose rest their father is responsible. Scripture tells us that we are obligated to guard them241 lest they do anything on the Sabbath that we are prohibited from doing. The same applies to nor thy man-servant, nor thy maid-servant who is in our power. We our obligated to guard him and not allow him to do any work for another party; otherwise, we violate a negative commandment,242 (v. 10). so that thy man-servant and thy maid-servant may rest as well as thou (Deut. 5:14). This was explained by Moses our master in the way we have noted.243 It is only on this condition that the stranger may dwell in our gates, namely, that the stranger does not do any work on the Sabbath and on Yom Kippur.244 Hence the stranger is also mentioned in the second version.245 It is the same case with the sexual prohibitions.246 The stranger may dwell among us only if he observes the sexual prohibitions. Likewise with regard to eating blood.247 When reading the Book of Jeremiah we noticed that the prophet was very strict about the Sabbath.248 The prophet explicitly stated that if Israel returns to Sabbath observance and keeps the Sabbath as they were commanded to, then even though the decree that Jerusalem be destroyed was issued, they would not be exiled from their place, and the thrones of the Davidic dynasty would remain standing in Jerusalem.249
