Ibn Ezra on Exodus 3:8/
1AND I AM COME DOWN. Scripture says this because the heavens are more glorious than the earth.66 implies that God is only in heaven. I.E. says that Scripture employs this terminology only because the heavens are more glorious than the earth since God is all over. God’s glory fills everything.67 It is only because the decrees come down from heaven that Scripture employs the term And I am come down.68. I.E. first proposed that it is used out of respect for God. He now suggests that it refers to God’s decrees. Furthermore, the angel was a higher form69 and Moses was not able to go up to heaven.70 Hence Scripture reads, and I am come down to save my people.71
2AND TO BRING THEM UP. This is in contrast to and I am come down.72 As I dwell in a high place73 so will I cause them to dwell in the most elevated place that is upon the earth.74 69b, “The Land of Israel is elevated above all the lands of the earth.” I.E. soon implies that this is not to be taken literally. The aforementioned are the words of the angel.75 are the words of an angel (Krinsky). It is likewise written, He made him ride on the high places of the earth (Deut. 32:13).76 Behold, the Israelites went out of a land where they were afflicted to a good land.77. Scripture does not mention the Girgashites78 because they were the smallest of the seven.79 Now, it is fitting to raise the following question: Since six nations were descended from Canaan, why does Scripture mention the Canaanites?80 The answer is: The term Canaanites is an ethnic name and includes all the nations living in Canaan.81 Hence the entire land was called the land of Canaan. The Perizzite is to be identified with Sidon.82 The rest of the sons of Canaan mentioned in Scripture were few in number and are included in the term Canaanite.
