Ibn Ezra on Exodus 18:13/

1AND IT CAME TO PASS ON THE MORROW. Of Jethro’s coming.
2THAT MOSES SAT. As was his custom.
3FROM THE MORNING UNTO THE EVENING. Note that true morning163 begins with sunrise. The term morning is, as I have previously noted,164 also applied to the breaking of dawn, when light begins to be seen in the clouds. In the latter instance the term is artificially used. Similarly, true evening begins when the sun sets. The term is also artificially applied up to the time that the light sets.165 David similarly said, The sun ariseth, they166 slink away (Ps. 104:22). Scripture then states, Man goeth forth unto his work, And to his labor until the evening (Ps. 104:23).167 The psalm seems to describes man’s working hours from sunrise to sunset, for erev is antithetical to sunrise. We thus see that evening begins at sunset. It is therefore fitting to interpret from even unto even, shall ye keep your sabbath (Lev. 23:32) to mean: from the true evening to the true evening.168 However, our sages of blessed memory “added from the weekday to the holy day”169 and said that the Sabbath does not end until the stars come out.170 34b. It is thus fitting from the Torah’s point of view to start the Sabbath at sunset. All scientists and astronomers admit that the day’s boundary is171 the moment when the circle of the sun faces all over the area of the earth. This starts at sunrise and ends at sunset.
