Ibn Ezra on Exodus 18:14/
1AND…SAW ALL THAT HE DID TO THE PEOPLE. That he caused them to stand from morning to evening.
2Rabbi Solomon172 says that Jethro reacted in this manner because Moses alone sat and Israel stood, the latter being improper.173” There can be no doubt that Moses’ station was too great for Jethro to say this.174 For behold, Aaron, who was a great man in the eyes of Israel and was older than Moses, said to Moses, Oh my lord (Num. 12:11). Moses acted in the proper manner, for the judge sits and the litigants stand. We thus read, then both the men, between whom the controversy is, shall stand (Deut. 19:17). Jethro said, why175 etc. to Moses for no reason other than that Moses was sitting alone and had no other judges to assist him. [WHY.] Rabbi Merinus says that the word maddu’a (why) is similar to mallakhem (what mean ye) (Is. 3:15) and to mazzeh (what is that) in what is that in thy hand (Ex. 4:2), each of which is a compound of two words.176 being a compound of mah (what) and zeh (this) and mallakhem being a compound of mah (what) and lakhem (to you). The same is true of maddu’a, which means: what is in your mind that you do this?177 is a compound of ma (what) and du’a (opinion), i.e., what is your opinion? Du’a is spelled dalet, vav, ayin, and is a variation of the root yod, dalet, ayin, meaning knowledge.
