Ibn Ezra on Exodus 20:20/
1YE SHALL NOT MAKE WITH ME. Its meaning is: Look, I who dwell in heaven spoke to you without any intermediary.311 (v. 20). Indeed, Scripture explicitly states, The Lord spoke with you face to face (Deut. 5:4). Do not be perplexed because Scripture repeats, ye shall not make.312 appears twice in our verse. Scripture is following elegant Hebrew style. It is similar to Thou shalt not covet (v. 14).313 It all has one meaning,314 to be read as follows: “Ye shall not make with Me gods of silver, or gods of gold.” It is like Thou shalt not make unto thee a graven image (v. 4). Its meaning is: do not make forms that receive powers from above and think that you make them for My glory, in that they will serve as an intermediary between Me and you, like the golden calf which Israel made. As I will explain in its place, Aaron made the golden calf for God’s glory.315 God warned Israel at the beginning316 not to make gods of gold because He knew that Israel would make the golden calf.
2The meaning of with Me thus is: I have no need for intermediaries to be with Me. Scripture therefore states afterwards, I will come unto thee and bless thee. Its meaning is, through My glory I will come unto thee.
