Ibn Ezra on Exodus 20:21/
1AN ALTAR OF STONE.317 That is what I.E. comments upon. Some say that the reason318 is that they not make images on the altar. Scripture therefore commanded that the altar be constructed from unhewn stones. Perhaps these commentators can explain why the entire tabernacle was adorned with cherubim and why cherubim of gold were placed over the arkcover. Furthermore, the entire temple constructed by Solomon was decorated with cherubim, images,319 However, I Kings 6:32 reads, timmorot (palm trees). It is possible that temunot is a scribal error and that we should read timmorot. and open flowers (I Kings 6:32). These places were more important than the place of the altar.320 I will speak on this in the Torah portion Ki Tissa. Some say that the meaning of An altar of earth is that the altar shall not be constructed on a high place. However, this is not what the words imply. The fact that Scripture goes on to state next, And if thou make Me an altar of stone is proof of this.321 Our sages said that An altar of earth means that the bronze altar322 is to be filled with earth. They spoke the truth, for that is what they did. However, this verse serves only as a reminder323 and as a support.324 This325 means that the bronze altar is to be filled with earth. is not its literal meaning. The earth that was placed in the altar was not essential,326 and the altar327 was known only as the bronze altar. It was so named because it was made out of bronze. The altar of incense328 was also called the gold altar because it was covered with gold.329 Furthermore, if the implication of An altar of earth is an altar filled with earth, then the meaning of an altar of stone is an altar filled with stones. However, we cannot say that the altar330 was not constructed of stones, for Scripture explicitly tells us that it was made out of stones.331 The reference332 is to the altar made on Mount Ebal. I will now explain. Saadiah Gaon says that there is a difference of opinion concerning the altar that Moses built beneath Mount Sinai.333 Some say that he built the altar before the giving of the Torah. Others maintain that he built it afterwards. The Gaon agrees with the first opinion. He says that what Scripture records in this chapter, namely, the chapter which contains the words All that the Lord hath spoken we will do (Ex. 19:8), is repeated in the second chapter, that is, in the chapter that reads, All that the Lord hath spoken will we do, and obey (Ex. 24:7).334 I will prove to you conclusively that Moses built the altar after the giving of the Torah. This chapter clearly states that God told Moses, when he went up to the mountain of God prior to the giving of the Torah, Ye have seen what I did unto the Egyptians…Now therefore, if ye will hearken unto My voice (Ex. 19:4, 5). God started by saying, Thus shalt thou say to the house of Jacob (Ex. 19:3). Now Moses did not relate335 any commandments, statutes, or ordinances to Israel. He merely wanted to hear from their very lips whether they wanted to listen to God’s voice and do what He commanded them. Israel replied by saying, we will do (Ex. 19:8). Scripture then goes on to report, And Moses told the words of the people unto the Lord (Ex. 19:9). Moses then sanctified Israel so that they would be fit to hear God’s word, which consisted of the Ten Statements. He now336 started to instruct the people in God’s commandments. When Moses approached the thick darkness God told him everything stated in the section that begins, Ye shall not make with Me (v. 20)337 and the entire chapter of Now these are the ordinances (Ex. 21:1) up to, for they will be a snare unto thee (Ex. 23:33). Scripture then tells us, And Moses came (Ex. 24:3); that is, he came down from the mountain. Scripture then goes on to state, and [Moses] told the people all the words of the Lord and all the ordinances (Ibid.). The words of the Lord refers to the positive and negative commandments, starting with Ye shall not make with Me—gods of silver (v. 20); the account of the altar and all the positive and negative commandments found in the chapter that begins, And these are the Ordinances, such as thou shalt surely bring it back to him again (Ex. 23:4); thou shalt restore it unto him by that the sun goeth down (Ex. 22:25), and Thou shalt not revile God (Ex. 22:27). The ordinances refer to the laws dealing with slavery, assault, fights, goring, arson, theft, oaths. It is concerning these that Scripture there writes, and all the ordinances (Ex. 24:3). It is concerning these laws that our forefathers said, will we do, and obey (Ex. 24:7). The meaning of will we do is, we will observe the positive and the negative commandments. The meaning of and obey is: we will obey the ordinances. The Israelites therefore added and obey, something which they at first338 did not say339 following the giving of the Torah. The meaning of An altar of earth clearly is, as the phrase implies, an altar made out of earth. This is what Scripture refers to when it writes later, and builded an altar under the mount (Ex. 24:4). Scripture here writes, and shalt sacrifice thereon thy burnt-offerings, and thy peace-offerings (v. 21), and it is there written, [and they] offered burnt-offerings, and sacrificed peace-offerings (Ex. 24:5).340 There is no doubt that the section beginning, An altar of earth and also Ye shall not make with Me (v. 20) were stated because of the blood of the covenant which Moses dashed on the altar (Ex. 24:6) and because the people pledged that the Lord alone would be their God and that they would observe His commandments and ordinances (Ex. 24:7). Scripture mentions, thy sheep, and thine oxen (v. 21) because both of them are kinds of animals from which burnt offerings and peace offerings may be brought.341 I saw a heretic, may his bones be crushed, arguing against the sages of the Talmud for saying, Which was the place appointed for the sacrifices (Zevachim 5:1).342 deals with the place set aside for the various sacrifices. The term used by the Mishnah for various sacrifices is zevachim. The heretic claimed that he never found the Torah using the term sacrifice (zevach) except for a peace offering.343 apply it to all sorts of sacrificial offerings. We thus find Scripture speaking of a burnt offering and sacrifices (zevachim). The burnt offering is an entity unto itself, and sacrifices refer only to peace offerings, as in [and they] offered burnt-offerings, and sacrificed peace-offerings of oxen unto the Lord (Ex. 24:5). We344 find this to be the case all over. Now I showed this heretic that what he said was incorrect. Scripture here states, and shalt sacrifice345 We thus see that the term zavach also applies to peace offerings. Similarly with the noun zevach/zevachim. thereon thy burnt-offerings, and thy peace-offerings. He then admitted that he sinned in contradicting people eminently greater than any who lived in all the generations that came after them.
2[IN EVERY PLACE WHERE I CAUSE MY NAME TO BE MENTIONED.] Its meaning and interpretation is, in every place where I will set a memorial for My name, that is, in every place where My glory dwells such as Shilo and Nob where the ark stood. If you come to the aforementioned place for the sake of My name to visit Me, I too will come unto you and bless you.
3[I WILL COME UNTO THEE.] This is an anthropomorphism. Its meaning is: you will find Me in the place upon which I cause My name to be mentioned, which is the place of My glory.346 I, as it were, came to you because I knew that you would come and it is because of you that I came. Furthermore, because you came to pay Me homage, I will come unto thee and bless thee. You will have no need to seek anyone else, for you will find Me as long as My glory is there.
