Ibn Ezra on Exodus 20:22/
1AND IF THOU MAKE ME AN ALTAR OF STONE. The altar that Moses built to make a covenant with Israel with the blood of the covenant347 [was made out of earth].348 God commanded349 that Israel build an altar of stone on the other side of the Jordan before they would inherit the land and that they write the entire Torah upon the stones, because many of the commandments are contingent upon the Land of Israel.350 We similarly find that God required their children351 to build such an altar when they entered the land352 because of the commandments contingent upon the Land of Israel.353 They sacrificed and ate peace offerings there354 as their fathers did.355 According to the above, the meaning of And if thou make an altar of stone is, now build an altar of earth. However, if you are worthy to enter the Land of Israel, then you will make Me an altar of stone.
2IT.356 The reference is to the stones.
3HEWN STONES. Its meaning is similar to that of but his minister Joshua, the son of Nun, a young man (Ex. 33:11).357 Similarly here, lo tivneh ethem gazit (do not build a hewn structure out of them).358 (literally, you shall not build them hewn stones) is short for lo tivneh ethem binyan gazit. The word gazit (hewn stones) comes from the same root as gozeze (shearers) in and went up unto his sheep-shearers (Gen. 38:12) and gaz (cut) in, For it is speedily cut, and we fly away (Ps. 90:10).359 It is the same case with nagozu (cut) in Even so shall they be cut down, and he shall pass away (Nahum 1:12). Its meaning360 is, cut.361 Only unhewn stones, that is, stones as God created them, [were to be used].
4FOR IF THOU LIFTED UP THY TOOL UPON IT. The word cherev (tool) refers to an iron instrument made for cutting.362 usually means a sword. Hence I.E.’s comment. It is possible that the instrument is called a cherev because it destroys (mecharevet). Scripture elsewhere states, thou shalt lift up no iron tool upon them (Deut. 27:5),363 (iron tool) rather than cherev is used in this parallel verse. We thus see that cherev refers to an iron tool used for cutting. that is, upon the altar of stones that Israel built.364 We should not look for explanations for the commandments. However, from a rational point of view it is possible that the prohibition against hewn stones is similar to the law governing “a vile thing.”365 Sacrificial flesh which has spoiled. See Lev. 7:18. It is unseemly for that which is left over from a sacrifice which was brought upon the altar to become vile, for if what remains of a sacrifice becomes vile then the sacrifice, which was sanctified, is defiled. The same is true of the prohibition against hewn stones. It is possible that the chips that result from the stone-cutting be profaned by being dedicated to idolatrous use if the builders cut stones in order to build an altar. The latter would be disrespectful. Now Scripture states366 that the priest atones upon the altar.367
